Aftonglans is a digital platform and alias for a Swedish painter who creates acrylic paintings featuring mysterious characters rich in expression.
The visual identity I created for Aftonglans is playful, imperfect, and bold. It references a gritty handcrafted quality seen in 90’s New York and underground scenes, while incorporating a modern quirkiness.
The visual identity
The primary need for a visual identity for Aftonglans was creating a polished but fun visual identity that makes the platform and brand feel more elevated and suited for a digital world.
Aftonglans is a Swedish term used by Swedish poet Vilhelm Ekelund, and it translates to evening shine or moonlight. The visual identity has a recurring theme of a beam and soft, wobbly shapes that reference crafting, and when the last sun beams hit the water during sunset.
The color palette contains a mix of airy and burnt colors, creating a natural depth with freshness.
The typefaces are two playful sans serifs. Both have a handcrafted quality, with imperfections such as uneven and asymmetrical weights and strokes.
